Quilts in Modern Color Book Tour

I love reading books about quilting and the new book Quilts in Modern Color by Amber Elliot (@alderwoodstudio) does not disappoint. Amber reached out to see if I'd be interested in participating in a blog tour and of course, I was happy to say yes!

It was also perfect timing. The thing is, I recently finished two quilts using a warm color palette and because there were plenty of leftovers to spare, I was thrilled to use them up for another round. Amber dedicates a portion of the book to color theory and gradients, making it a great resource for those looking to use modern color combinations for their quilt projects. Personally, I just love making a project by a fellow pattern designer. It’s a great way to take a break from my own stuff and it’s a good excuse to make a new quilt. Win-win!

Fabrics used (from top): kona yarrow, bella saffron, kona daffodil, bella afternoon (pictured but not in the quilt), bella cantaloupe, cotton couture peach, kona nectarine, bella mango, essex yarn dyed linen oyster

There’s a wonderful variety of projects in the book and I went with the Aventurine Wall Hanging. This came together FAST, even after making two 100% user errors: I sewed one too many colors (that’s why there’s an extra color above) and then I trimmed the blocks incorrectly. My fault for simultaneously rewatching a 90s movie that my younger self had never realized had so many red flags! 😳 Regardless of my mistake, this easy, forgiving project still worked like a charm.

Aside from her color expertise, Amber also does a great job of showing the quilts in their natural habitat. They're beautifully photographed on couches and beds, or hung on walls, creating inspiration to jazz up your own space with colorful quilts.

Overall, Quilts in Modern Color is a lovely addition to any quilter's library, whether you're looking for ways to add a touch of oomph to your modern quilt, or looking for new patterns to try. You can find the book at C&T Publishing or your favorite bookshop!
